Mad Max feels like the embodiment of everything Ubisoft has been building with its own dire stable of open world games – a pure saturation of nebulous “content” that offers nothing of substance but simply litters a massive map with repetitive busywork so it may display a facsimile of “value” to its audience.
Perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad if the game itself wasn’t ponderous in everything it does. You can’t just press a button to do anything, you have to hold it – hold it to enter or exit a car, hold it to pick things up, hold it to drink healing water, hold it to
get healing water, hold it to snipe, hold it to
notsnipe. Hold it to pick up fuel cans, ignite fuel cans, drop fuel cans, and pick fuel cans up again when you accidentally drop it because the X button is assigned to too many things.
It’s probably worth getting many months from now, when all your good games are played and the price tag is severely reduced. Quite why Warner Bros. didn’t get it out during the Summer drought (and way ahead of
MGSV) is a question we may never get answered, but until this thing goes on sale at a much later date, I’ve one spot of advice for now…
Just walk away.
